Welcome to Universiti Sains Malaysia Intelligent Biometric Group (USM-IBG).

The Intelligent Biometric Group (IBG), which has been formed in February 2010, is the research group that concentrates on research related to security and biometrics. Currently, the group has seven principal researchers; Engr. Dr. Shahrel A. Suandi, Dr. Haidi Ibrahim, Dr. Mohd Fadzli Salleh, Dr. Bakhtiar Affendi Rosdi, Dr. Dzati Athiar Ramli and Dr. Mohammad Ghulam Rahman, who are focusing on face-finger-motion biometrics, image enhancement in surveillance, image/video coding and compression, finger vein-knuckle biometrics, voice-lips motion biometrics and communication security, respectively. The group has currently more than 20 postgraduate students who are focusing on the cutting edge research in biometrics. Despite of its young age, the group has successfully secured research grants worth more than RM500,000 and published more than 30 journals and conference papers which most of them are listed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) by ISI Thomson, SCOPUS, Engineering Index, IEEE Explorer and some famous indexes. Apart from research, some of the members are also actively involved in consultation and product commercialization. For product commercialization, collaborations with real market players have been established. To date, a prototype which is called “EMo4ID – Eyes and Mouth for Identity” and “FaceBARS – Face Biometric for Attendance Recording Systems” have been developed for real-time identity verification system. In the near future, we are looking forward to research and develop hi-tech biometric products that incorporate our research outcomes.
